Billhook with Protective Cover for Forest Schools
Billhooks supplied with properly fitting covers can be difficult to find because billhook shapes vary considerably. Traditionally, most counties developed their own billhook pattern, resulting in different blade lengths, curves and styles. This means that a standard sheath or cover will not fit every design.
At Forest School Shop, we supply a billhook with a purpose-made protective blade cover designed specifically to fit the billhook provided. This helps keep the blade safely covered while being transported to and from your Forest School or woodland site.
As an environmentally responsible company, we reuse materials wherever possible. Our billhook covers are therefore generally handmade from recycled, upcycled or surplus materials. They are created for function rather than appearance, so we cannot guarantee a particular colour, style, finish or level of neatness. However, we do guarantee that the cover will fit the billhook supplied.
Occasionally, the cover may be supplied as a slip-style case rather than a traditional sheath. When a slip-style cover is provided, the materials used may not always be recycled.
Availability and Lead Times
Many of our billhook covers are handmade by one of our in-house craftspeople. As a result, there may be a delay while your cover is produced. Slip-style covers may be available more quickly.
If you order when covers are temporarily out of stock, we may send the billhook first so that it can be used in the meantime. The protective cover will then follow separately once it is ready.
Lead times can vary and may occasionally be lengthy. If you urgently require the cover—particularly for an upcoming Forest School training course—please contact us before placing your order to check availability.
Please remember that our handmade covers are designed for practical protection rather than appearance. Their colour, material, design and finish will vary.
Billhook Features and Uses
The billhook features an approximately 10-inch steel blade and a traditional wooden handle. It is ideal for coppicing, woodland management, greenwood crafts, splitting small firewood and traditional campsite woodcraft activities.
