Description

Conker Clamps are lovely traditional tools that have a magical autumn feel to them. Each Conker Clamp looks much like a cep mushroom, and is made solely of wood.  The chamber will accommodate most sized conkers (horse chestnuts) or smaller seeds, such as acorns or hazelnuts. The clamp features a wooden screw that lowers with a twist and holds the conker firmly in place so that a child (or adult) can safely drill into a conker using our conker drills (see our website).

The Conker Clamp may also be used as a nut cracker, and makes a lovely gift for use around a crackling winter fire. The nut cracker stands 10cm high, and is chunky enough to make it easy to use by both children and adults. They are perfect for outdoor and indoor activities, especially for nature-based learning and forest schools.

Traditional Conker Games and their History

The Conker is the nut which is produced from the Horse Chestnut Tree (Aesculus hippocastanum) - not to be confused with a sweet chestnut. The game of conkers is thought to have evolved from an old game known as 'conquerors', which was a popular past time for country children here in Britain. This game is thought to have first used shells in place of conkers, which by the 20th century had been replaced by these autumn fruits - which also gave rise to their common name of 'Conker' deriving from 'conqueror'.
