Reptile Survey Mats
An exciting activity for children and adults when exploring nature is to find our reptilian friends which lurk in many grasslands, heathlands and woodland margins - but they will only bask in the sun when there is material (natural or unnatural) that absorbs heat and our reptile mats are the ideal tools for this.
Each Reptile Mat measures approx. 500 x 500mm and is supplied in a pack of three mats - ideal for conservation, surveys and fun outdoor education activities.
Reptile Survey Felts
Each Bitumen Felt square makes the perfect sunbathing area for retiles, as well as sleeping areas when the sun goes in thanks to the absorbed warmth. When the day becomes cooler, reptiles and small mammals will retreat under the material. Not only does each Reptile Mat offer a great observation area, they also provide safety from predators.
Where to Locate Reptile Mats
Find a suitable area away from paths and busy areas that tend to attract early morning sun. Place the mats in a clearing and leave for a few days to establish a safe area for reptiles. After this time, if there are reptiles in the area the chances are that they will begin to use the mats. Simply observe from a distance on top of the tile for lizards or snakes, and look under the tiles later in the day where grass snakes and other critters will often rest up (be careful of adders if the live in the area!).
Here at Forest School Shop we used these felts on some local land (with permission) and within a few weeks we were lucky enough to find several grass snakes, common lizards, a toad and even several field voles and shrews!
